Melbourne HostelsTraditionally St Kilda has been the area where backpackers tend to stay in Melbourne. St Kilda is situated on the beach. With plenty of backpacking hostels. St Kilda is one of the main nightlife and restaurant areas in Melbourne and is a short tram ride into the Melbourne City centre.
Cooee on St Kilda
Situated in St Kilda. Is a very new clean hostel. Has an excellent kitchen facility. A very good common area to meet other travellers. Secure luggage lock up facilities. Swipe card security access for all rooms. Really good beds with brand new mattresses. The Ritz for Backpackers
169 Fitzroy Road St Kilds – Known as the party hostel. Located in St Kilda. Has a pub downstairs. This is not the place to stay if you want a good night sleep but a great hostel for meeting people. Little bit of a party hostel with the Elephant and Wheel Barrow English pub downstairs which is famous for its Neighbours, the Australian TV show, theme nights. Where you will find past and present neighbours actors drop in for a beer. Also has a excellent job agency at the hostel for those looking for work. Base Backpackers St Kilda
This backpackers is very popular with female travellers as they have a floor called the Sanctuary dorms which only allows females to stay on that floor. Only down side to this hostel is that people comment about the noise from the downstairs bar. So if you do stay there, try not to stay on the first or second floor.
Urban Central Backpackers
Highly rated hostel. Opposite the Crown Casino with a 5-10 minute walk to the city centre and 10 minutes tram ride to St Kilda. Very good kitchen facilities. Have a bar at the hostel which makes it easier to meet other travellers. Security is very good with touch cards. Very clean hostel.
Freeman Lodge
Situated in Richmond which is just outside the city centre but still a excellent area to stay. Close to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This is the hostel to stay at if you require a little peace and quiet and a good night sleep. Not a party hostel. The staff could not be more helpful. A very cosy hostel, with clean rooms and facilities and a well equipped kitchen.
Claremont Guesthouse
A very quiet hostel. Great from couples. More like a cheap hotel than a hostel. It’s only four stops from the centre of Melbourne and a mere 100 yards from the train station. Furthermore, it’s located in the very trendy South Yarra district so there's lots of beautiful people, clothes shops, nightclubs and eateries on your doorstep.
