Melbourne Cricket GroundVictorians love their sport and they often say Melbourne is the sports capital of the world but few would argue that Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia. The Formula One, Australian Rules Football, Grand Slam Tennis, Spring Horse Racing Carnival, Cricket, the list goes on.
Melbourne is home to one of the greatest sports stadiums in the world. The Melbourne Cricket Ground can hold up to 100 000 people and this stadium is like a religious monument to Victorian people. It plays host to any number of events including numerous AFL games every week throughout the winter season, including what many Aussie will say is the most important event in Australia - the Australian Rules Football League Grand Final. It also holds the Boxing Day Test Cricket match held on December 26th each year, the 1956 Olympics and formed a central part of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Amazingly, it is only a couple of km from the centre of the city and forms the centre piece of the sporting island of Olympic park, the Rod Laver Arena which is the home of the Australian Tennis Open and the Vodaphone Arena. On non-event days MCG Tours depart regularly from 10am - 3pm from Gate 3 in the Olympic Stand. Bookings are suggested. Adults - $15.00, Concession - $11.00. www.mcg.org.au This is a must see for any sports fan. |
