Broadband internet in Australia is relatively slow compared to other parts of the world and currently is a real talking point between the government and the telecommunication companies.

 

Currently the fastest ADSL speed in Australia 1500kbps. Although these days, ADSL2 is readily available in the bigger cities. Cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth will have ADSL2 which will enable a average speed of 6-12 Mbits/sec.

 

Cable internet is available to households in the major capital cities but must have a pay tv cable connected to the house. Most internet café in Australia will have speeds of at least 1500kbps which is fine for surfing the internet and using voice over internet (Skype,MSN).

 

Internet café are easily found in all parts of Australia especially in the tourist areas. The average cost of surfing the internet is $4 an hour. All hostels and hotels have ADSL internet facilities available.
