Barrier Reef Cairns

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, The Great Barrier Reef has to be seen if you are going to Cairns. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, composed of roughly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands that stretch for 2,600 kilometres covering an area of approximately 344,400 km².

Over 1500 species of fish, 14 different species of sea snakes, and over 200 species of birds and 400 species of coral live on the Great Barrier Reef. 30 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises live in, or visit Great Barrier Reef waters and six of the seven species of sea turtles in the world are found on the Reef.

Day tours range from $100 -$200 dollars depending on whether you are snorkelling or diving. Add on about $50 for an introductory dive. Well worth it. Prices vary because the further you go out from the coast the better the diving is. Day tours also leave from Port Douglas where locals say the reef is slightly better.

Wanting to do it on the cheap and experience the Barrier Reef. Catch the ferry transfer to Fitzroy Island. It is about 45 minutes from cairns and cost $47 including taxes. From there you can hire a snorkel and flippers for $15 a day.

There are hundreds of boats to choose from. So pick the one that you think suits you. most boats travel at least 90 minutes to their dive spot and the further you travel to the outer reef the better your Barrier Reef experience will be.
