Aboriginal Cultures

Most anthropologists will agree that Australian Aboriginal people represent one of the oldest known living cultures on earth.

Recent dating of the earliest known archaeological sites on the Australian continent - using thermo-luminescence and other modern dating techniques - have pushed back the date for Aboriginal presence in Australia to at least 40,000 years. Some of the evidence points to dates over 60,000 years old, Aboriginal people roamed the Australian landscape, living in harmony in a nomadic partnership with nature. Australian Aboriginal people are a diverse group of people, living vastly different lifestyles in each corner of the country. There are up to 700 traditional societies in Australia and over 200 languages.
Aboriginal Cultures
Indigenous Australians survived in harsh climatic and environmental conditions which ranged from cold temperate to hot tropical, coping with arid conditions and torrential rains. They have dwelt for many thousands of years in ways that sustained their societies while conserving resources, protecting fragile soils and leaving a light footprint on the environment.

Since the Aboriginal flag was first flown, it has become a symbol of unity for its people. The colours have specific meanings for them. They are proud of there flag.

The red stands for the land. Much of Australia's soil has a red tinge to it, and they are spiritually connected to their land. The land is sacred and of utmost importance. The yellow stands for the sun. The black signifies their people.
